This curated set of papers, jointly hosted with Densho Digital Repository, is a topical compiled set of correspondence and associated materials pulled from two different administrative collections: UA 2/1/7, the Fred Engelhardt Papers, 1937 – 1944 and UA 3/1/2, the Everett B. Sackett Files 1935 - 1974. These records have been digitized to draw attention to these records and connect them to a larger history of Nisei (second generation Japanese American) resettlement at various colleges and universities in the United States in the wake of the World War II incarceration of more than 100,000 people of Japanese ancestry.
Engelhardt, former President of UNH, and Sackett, who held the title of Registrar among other positions at the University of New Hampshire, were the two individuals responsible for establishing policies related to the admission of Japanese Americans. The contents of this digital collection detail the shifting admission policies of UNH according to Registrar Sackett, his correspondence with several prospective students seeking admission to the school, and President Engelhardt’s cooperation with the National Japanese American Student Relocation Council.
