Abstract
A majority of Maine residents think artificial intelligence (AI) will have a negative effect on the country over the next ten years, and many are pessimistic about the effect of AI on news, elections, the environment, and personal relationships. A majority of working Mainers report using AI at their job, particularly those with a college degree or more education, and a majority say it has made them more productive. Chat GPT is the most popular large language model (LLM) among AI users in the Pine Tree State, but Claude is the highest rated LLM among users. Following Governor Mills' veto of legislation on the matter, a plurality of Maine residents support a halt to new AI data centers in the state and nearly two-thirds would oppose building an AI data center in their town or city.
