Abstract
Four in ten Mainers say they will have an artificial tree while slightly fewer will have a real tree this Christmas. Those who prefer a real tree often mention the sight, smell, or tradition as reasons why, while those who prefer an artificial tree mention less work and lower costs. Six in ten Mainers say "Merry Christmas" more often than "Happy Holidays" and a plurality of Maine residents plan on spending less on holiday gifts than they did last year.
