Description

A music manuscript folio with the notation for the songs "The Princess Royal--the New Way", "Britons! Strike Home"—as well as its lyrics—and "Deserter" on the front. "Deserter" is labelled as an "opera dance" from 1772-73; this song possibly comes the well-known French comic opera Le déserteur. The inner verso page has notation and lyrics for "How much Superior Beauty Awes", with an additional note reading "--Love in a Village" (1762)". This song comes from Act 3 of the opera Love in a Village, composed by Thomas Arne. The inner recto page has notation for two songs called "Linnet", "East India Nightingale", "Skylark", and "Rising of the Lark"—all of which come from John Walsh's 1717 collection of recorder tunes "The Bird Fancyer's Delight"— as well as "Haunted Tower", which is taken from the song "Finale: The banished ills of heretofore" from the 1789 opera "The Haunted Tower". The back page has notation for another version of "Linnet" as well as the song "The Duke of York's Favorite Troop". Sources are listed on the manuscript. Part of the collection of songs and dances from the 17th and 18th centuries gathered by Bessie Osgood; ^"The Princess Royal--the New Way" is in G minor and 4/4 time; "Britons! Strike Home" is in C major and 3/4 time; "Deserter" is in D major and 4/4 time; "How much Superior Beauty Awes" is in G major and 2/4 time; Both versions of "Linnet" on the inner page are in G major and 4/4 time; "East India Nightingale" is in G major and 3/4 time; "Skylard" is in D major and 3/4 time; "Rising of the Lark" is in D major and 2/4 time; "Haunted Tower" is in G major and 2/4 time; the third version of "Linnet" is in G minor and 2/4 time; "The Duke of York's Favorite Troop" is in D major and 3/8 time.
