Description

A music manuscript folio with the notation and lyrics for the songs "The Whistling Plowman" and "Pray Goody Please to Moderate" on the front. The inside pages contain notation for the songs "The Bear"—which is labelled as an English Dance—"French Dance", "The Bonnet"—which is labelled as a Californian Dance—and "The Black Dance", which is labelled as a contradance. The back page has the notation for the songs "Cinderella" and "The Flowers of Edinburgh", both of which are labelled as contradances. Sources are listed on the manuscript. Part of the collection of songs and dances from the 17th and 18th centuries gathered by Bessie Osgood; ^"The Whistling Plowman" is in C major and begins in 4/4 before changing meter to 3/4; "Pray Goody Please to Moderate" is in F major and 4/4 time; "The Bear" is in G major and 6/8 time; "French Dance" is in G major—with the B section entirely in D major—and 6/8 time; "The Bonnet" is in C major and 2/2 time; "The Black Dance" is in G major and 2/2 time; "Cinderella" is in D major and 2/2 time; "Flowers of Edinburgh" is in G major and 2/2 time.
