Project Description

In this project I explore how Morrison uses both counter narratives and counter memories to challenge how the reader perceives certain thematic content the context of the story as well as in their own lives. Memory plays an integral role in the plot between the characters of Roberta and Twyla, as they struggle to make sense of their own childhood and in turn who they have become over the years. Morrison's pointed choice to never state the race of Twyla or Roberta couples with ambiguity of the race of the character Maggie as well, creating an interplay of counter narrative on memory and how we view racial stereotypes.
