Abstract
“‘Smoke Alarm’ and Other Stories” features flash fictions, experimental fictions, and short stories that are an attempt of the author to explore the interplay of cultures, generations, and individuals with conflicting mindsets. Specifically, many of the characters are of South Asian descent and living in America: parents who are immigrants and children who have to balance two worlds. Also at the heart of Samhita’s narratives are characters who think deeply, feel deeply. These stories are about the human condition that affects us all, about emotions, about heartbreak and grief and coming to terms with lives we don’t understand; just as much, they are about coming to terms with what we truly desire, about freedom.
