Abstract
Violating Community Guidelines is a collection of nonfiction essays centered around two major themes: queerness and pop culture. Organized into four parts, this thesis is mainly a chronological, queer coming-of-age story as I discuss my middle-school experiences through the present. However, themes are also considered as each section explores different aspects of my gender, sexuality, interpersonal relationships, and future anxieties, interwoven with the cultural perceptions surrounding each. There are traditional braided essays about finding gender affirmation through low-budget network television shows. There are deeply analytical pieces about the nuances of the gay tragedy. There are imagined scenarios where I smoke with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Each is different, and each offers a separate lens in which I view myself.
