Abstract
Mainers hold conflicting views about the U.S. economy, as only one-third expect businesses to experience bad times over the next twelve months, but two-thirds think a recession is likely in the next year or that the country is already in one. Nearly half of Maine residents feel worse off financially than they were a year ago and a majority report struggling at least somewhat to afford basic necessities. Republicans and Independents are far more likely than Democrats to report economic hardship and feel downbeat about their personal finances as well as their perceptions of the Maine and U.S. economies.
