Abstract

"Implications of the 2012 election from insider at Inside Higher Ed" is a podcast interview with Doug Lederman, Editor-in-Chief at Inside Higher Ed. Lederman offers his reflections on the 2012 presidential election year regarding key higher education policy topics: innovation, quality assurance, and accreditation. Specifically, Lederman notes that higher education will continue to see greater scrutiny with regard to its value in relation to price and outcomes. This scrutiny combined with constrained resources could boost efforts in innovation. Lederman also emphasizes the need for higher education to prove its quality and value to students and consumers, including preparing students for participation in the economy and ways to encourage civic engagement. According to Lederman the changing profile of the college student aligns with further exploration of alternative forms of education and credit, such as competency based education and prior learning assessment. To help ensure quality, regional accrediting organizations should consider mutual definitions and alignment. Lastly, Lederman offers the recommendation that faculty be included in the conversation regarding higher education policy and research, noting that faculty are truly the core of the institution of higher education.
