Abstract
"Education, workforce and literacy: An alliance for excellent education" is a podcast interview with Bob Wise, former governor of West Virginia and President of the Alliance for Excellent Education. Wise highlights the impediments to a successful transition from K-12 to postsecondary education, the three A’s: academic preparation, asset preparation, and attitude preparation. He further comments on how reformation of the student financial aid system and the implementation of the Common Core can help students in these three ‘preparation’ areas. Emphasizing that equitable education for all students is more than a moral issue, but an economic issue, Wise asserts that our current system of education is not adequate to educate all at an appropriate level. The alliance promotes the use of competency-based education and a blurring of the lines between K-12 and higher education. Wise also emphasizes the importance of literacy as priority not just in primary grades, but through all of K-12 to adequately prepare students for postsecondary education and the workforce.
Interview facilitation, commentary and discussion presented by Kathryn Dodge, Alison Griffin, and Elise Scanlon of Radio Higher Ed.
