Description

Tour the Irma G. Bowen Historic Clothing collection with its creators Astrida Schaeffer and Sarah Stinson for a behind the scenes look at the making of an online cultural heritage collection!

This digital collection contains detailed descriptions and over a thousand photographs that tell the stories of New Hampshire people, ranging from immigrant enclaves to the governor’s mansion, from the hands of housewives to skilled seamstresses. From a plain homespun housedress to an evening gown from Paris; a dress worn to marry, as well a dress worn to mourn. Through the record of preserved dresses, altered seams, imported fabrics, homespun, stains, patches, and secret padding, it is history written on an intimate scale; a glimpse of lives otherwise invisible to the historical record.
