Approaching automation: A planning model for GPO tapeloading - one library’s experience
Abstract
Given the availability of machine readable cataloging records for a significant number of United States federal documents, many libraries are either planning to include or have already begun to incorporate such materials in their online catalogs. After reviewing the literature, this article describes a model developed at San Jose State University for planning such automation and the resulting increased access. Model components include a description of the local situation and checklist questions used for a telephone survey. The article also describes the methodology followed in creating the final proposal for bringing federal documents records into the online catalog.
