Abstract

Germany’s vocational education and training system prepares students at the secondary educational level and beyond with occupation specific skills; but compared to general education curriculums, can lead to disadvantageous labor market outcomes later in the lifecycle. However, vocational education can be a system that offers better returns to a worker with general education qualifications who does not pursue higher education. To examine this tradeoff, multiple linear regressions estimated wages to determine the impact of vocational education in Germany. Using microdata of the BIBB/BAuA Employment Survey of 2018, results suggest that vocational education, at all levels, offers higher returns in wages compared to that of workers with no occupational degree.
