Abstract

NOAA Office of Coast Survey’s National Bathymetric Source (NBS) project exists primarily to create and maintain a high-resolution representation of the best available bathymetric data to support nautical charting. The NBS project is unique among other efforts to merge source bathymetry because the derived product directly supports safe navigation and carries forward source metadata. The bathymetry merging process primarily evaluates hydrographic quality metrics of uncertainty, feature detection, and seafloor coverage while also accounting for temporal and spatial variability. Built for data throughput, the NBS process is also able to support evolving navigational products, such as Precision Marine Navigation and S-102 bathymetry, and internal Coast Survey processes, such as hydrographic health modeling and survey planning. The NBS project also produces BlueTopo for public use and to support marine modeling and spatial planning.

Presenter Bio

Katrina Wyllie is part of NOAA’s Office of Coast Survey, Hydrographic Surveys Division, Operations Branch. Prior to Operations Branch, Katrina served as Chief of Survey Section at U.S. Army Corps of Engineers New England District in Concord, MA and also previously worked for NOAA’s Hydrographic Surveys Division Operations Branch in Silver Spring, MD and Atlantic Hydrographic Branch in Norfolk, VA. She has a B.S in Marine Biology from College of Charleston and an M.S. in Earth Sciences from University of New Hampshire.

Glen Rice is a part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Office of Coast Survey and Hydrographic Systems and Technology Branch (HSTB). Mr. Rice comes to HSTB from working with the Integrated Ocean and Coastal Mapping Center where he focused on seafloor acoustic backscatter from hydrographic multibeams, and also on other sources of data for NOAA charts. He previously served aboard the NOAA Hydrographic Ships Fairweather and Rude as a NOAA CORPS officer. Mr. Rice has a B.S. in Physics and and an M.S. in Ocean Engineering from the University of New Hampshire. He is currently working on his Ph.D. part time at CCOM.
