Abstract
All around the world, especially in China and America, maker culture has grown into a very popular subculture. This culture is a technology based extension of do it yourself (DIY) production. Throughout our paper we focused on four main research questions. The first question- what is maker culture? The second question- how has different media platforms improved and influenced the maker culture and movement? Within this question, we analyzed how Naomi Wu and Simone Giertz have used their social media platforms to succeed. Our third question is what challenges might one come across with the career path of a maker? By exploring their media, our goal was to look at the difficulties and complications the makers had to overcome with backlash of the media. Our last question was how do Chinese makers and American makers compare? We specifically chose Naomi Wu, who is from China, and Simone Giertz, who is from California, to be the perfect comparison of different cultures.
