Abstract
The Strength of An Icelandic Horse is a collection of linked essays that uncover the narrator’s development from his childhood, through his teenage years, and finally into his first year’s as an adult. Using carefully selected tales from his past, the narrator explores topics of masculinity, strength, individuality and courage.
Evoking the art of the personal essay allows for close, personal self-examination and ultimately unique, hard-earned self-truths. The time frame of these essays is secondary to the thematic narrative, which begins as a young boy without a father, and slowly builds towards a man on his own, grabbing the neck of an Icelandic horse
