Abstract
This is a collection of stories centered around the people who live in the small Midwestern town of Rose Valley. Four of the stories are retellings of the death of Asher Jones and explore the various ways that people grieve and remember those they have lost. They are an exploration of creation myths, being themselves variations on a set of events. Given the same beginning and outcome there are multiple roads to take which give the pieces completely different meanings. Other stories explore the various types of relationships and how people see and react to their world. From a girl breaking away from her mother's expectations and finding her own path to a man learning to be a single parent, these are stories about people trying to define themselves and make sense of their lives.
