Abstract

Where the River Touches is a microcosm of life along the Susquehanna. Sometimes strange, sometimes sad, sometimes lovely: each story captures rural life in an underrepresented part of the country. Unlike the Appalachian region, the Susquehanna River Basin is less defined. But it also carries a distinct and multifaceted culture. For example, “Opportunity Valley” represents small city life mixed with the exploration of the military industrial complex. “Carry All My Embers” is a depiction of small-town connection and guilt. “Canada Geese” displays mountain range life and familial connection. I want to explore these regions with the reader. But, perhaps more importantly, I want to display the strange and wonderful lives of those who inhabit the Susquehanna River Basin. All and all, I attempted to be holistic with my depiction of the area I grew up in and love.
