Abstract

The main tension of this collection of poems is its attempt to synthesize various schools of thought that have shaped contemporary poetry. It is a project that holds oppositions (e.g., experimentation and classicism, free verse and form, image and statement, self and society, literature and impermanence, and speech and music) in contrapposto. The tone of this manuscript is elegiac in its exploration of memory, transience, and love. How can nostalgia heal wounds from the past? How does one even begin accepting the past? The speaker of these poems conceptualizes time as spiraling. Though mostly free verse, some poems are formal, written in sestina, tanka, and sonnet. Flower Field: Poems is a manifesto about the redemption of beauty.
