Abstract
Out of the culture and mysticism of ancient Syria has evolved the personality of a poet and prophet, Gibran Kahlil Gibran. Hie homeland claims him as the foremost wise man. He is the originator of a new form of poetry in the Arabic language, the prose poem; young Syrian poets set up his writing as a model tor modern poetical composition. In America he is hailed as the interpreter of the Near East to the West, incorporating the psychological and inquiring spirit of modern times in the ancient parable and teachings of prophets. His English literary works are known tor their pure simplicity and beauty of expression and tor the truth and wisdom contained in their philosophy. The Prophet, Gibran's masterpiece in English, counts as its friends the people of many countries besides those whose inhabitants speak English or Arabic, for it has been translated into more than twenty languages.
