Abstract
Fire Bird: A Short Story Collection, is a collection of magical realist stories based on Ukrainian folklore and Slavic mythology that largely take place in the present day United States. Following the connecting motif of the Fire Bird, otherwise known as a phoenix, these stories touch on themes of transformation, coming of age, rebirth, grief, the dichotomy of life and death, and community. This collection is a representation of Ukrainian diaspora, my interest in exploring culture through the lens of magic, and the writing skills that I have developed over the course of this program.
