Abstract
AFTER ANOTHER: A MEMOIR By Bianca Bourgault University of New Hampshire, May, 2025
This work of nonfiction details my life and how I came to be a 28-year-old alcoholic spending over six weeks in a hospital bed during the summer of 2020. Beyond describing my childhood and adolescent years, I also frame how environments, generational trauma, and abuse all play into the disease that is addiction. I use both past and present tenses for my chapters; present for the hospital trauma in 2020 and past for my life up until that point. Most stories of addiction pinpoint one experience that was the catalyst for the escalation of drug abuse, but my story is full of moments—one thing after another—that fueled my addiction.
