Abstract

Ten years ago, at a loss as to how to handle his daughter’s mounting grief over the death of her mother, Ruth’s father put her on the ferry to Block Island with the name of a woman on a faded McDonald’s receipt and told her to look for Diana. Now, Diana’s sudden death, coupled with the announcement that Ruth’s teenage love is engaged, leaves Ruth trying to cope with the loss of another mother figure and looking at how little her life has changed in the past ten years. These Little Worlds follows Ruth as she tries to better understand her past, struggles against the shape her life has taken, and wonders if it’s too late to make a change.
