Abstract
Brittle is the Brimstone follows the strengths, struggles, and triumphs of women as they’ve clashed with faith-based misogyny, the patriarchy, and their own insecurities over the past 100 years in short fiction, stories, and a novella, ending with a brief satirical glimpse into the next 50 years. This collection contains drama, satire, historical fiction, speculative fiction, and literary fiction. I chose the tone of each piece purposefully for the time period and subject matter it is depicting, hoping the tone will help the reader adopt the mindset of the time period. I took many of these stories from my work in the MFA program, revised them according to workshop feedback, linked some of them together into the title novella, and rearranged them to fall into some sense of chronological order, though it’s not perfectly linear. There are pieces in each of the three sections that are original to this manuscript.
