Abstract
This thesis is a reflection of my creative interest to portray the loneliness and suffering and betrayal of humanity. This collection of short stories takes an open mind to experience and connect with the ideas put forth. A combination of a more realist approach to storytelling, a more metaphorical gateway to the abstract, and then the totally abstract, my work focuses on encompassing these storytelling methods to produce something that feels real emotionally but is hard, if not impossible, to explain literally. With my favorite stories that I’ve written, it’s always the weirdness that brings out the emotions we can’t seem to convey in telling our stories traditionally. I pride myself on writing in the abstract without following genre-prescriptive or genre-stereotypic storylines meant for satisfaction or trendiness or traditionality, but for stories that are tough to follow because they are trying to say something dreamlike about the human spirit, like a poem almost. These stories are deeply rooted in my background of childhood depression, anxiety, and separation. Each of these stories learns to tackle grief in some way, though often differently each time. I continue to strive for a more effective storytelling method that both stands out but is clear and cohesive. I’ve received much criticism for the way my works are strange, hard to comprehend, and rule-breaking. But I attribute my efforts, successes or failures, to getting closer to my creative goal. I present: my weird thoughts and expressions.
