Abstract
Hospitalized children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) face unique challenges, including communication barriers, sensory sensitivities, and disruptions to routine. These stressors can lead to increased agitation, difficulty receiving care, and higher hospitalization rates compared to their neurotypical peers. This document explores therapeutic interventions aimed at improving hospital experiences for children with ASD across various healthcare settings, including emergency departments, surgery, and inpatient units. Strategies include maximizing parental involvement, using visual schedules, providing sensory-friendly accommodations, and implementing autism-specific training for healthcare providers. Research indicates that such interventions significantly reduce distress and aggressive behaviors, leading to improved patient outcomes and enhanced family satisfaction.
