Abstract

Section III features Elizabeth Christopher’s, Brooches in Early Medieval Burials in England, the final research paper for her McNair Scholars research project with Dr. Samantha McCrane. In this work, Christopher explores how 5^th-9^th Century Anglo-Saxon brooches were used in funerary rituals. Through a detailed analysis of the distribution of funerary brooches in medieval burials, she argues that these objects may help us understand individual agency and sociocultural and communal markers of identity such as social status and mobility.
