Models of social contagion
Abstract
This paper presents a general mathematical framework for social processes characterized by contagion or learning, and examines several models, including two not previously seen in this literature, as special cases. We further outline a series of new statistical procedures for fitting and evaluating the appropriateness of alternative models of contagion. These procedures are illustrated using data on civil strife events in 16 countries during the decade 1961–1970.
