Abstract

"Quality assurance in higher education: A focus on student learning and learning outcomes" is a podcast interview with David Paris, Executive Director of the New Alliance for Student Learning and Accountability. Paris provides a brief overview of the Alliance and specifically discusses its recent publication, Committing to Quality: Guidelines for Assessment and Accountability in Higher Education. According to Paris, the guidelines represent a distillation of recommendations supporting the efforts of accreditors, organizations, faculty and foundations to move towards assessment of learning outcomes. In Paris’ view, the traditional form of assessment in higher education is not sufficient to meet the demands of a system which needs to produce the majority of the work force. Additionally, access, attainment, and quality should be the goal of institutions. Simply producing more graduates does not ensure their readiness for the workforce. Paris goes on to challenge the criticism that increased or different types of assessment will stifle creativity and academic freedom asserting that self-evaluation on learning outcomes challenges institutions with creativity solutions and further engages students.
