Abstract

Visual skills are essential for participation in early academic tasks including reading, writing, classroom engagement, and learning. However, functional vision difficulties often go unrecognized in kindergarten students, potentially affecting their academic performance and ability to learn within educational settings. The purpose of this capstone project was to develop and pilot a functional vision screening tool and program using a multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) framework for kindergarten students. A literature review informed the development of the project, including the creation of the functional visual screening tool, integration within MTSS, Tier 1 and Tier 2 interventions, and educational resources for educators and caregivers.

Project implementation focused on developing evidence-based resources, educating stakeholders, and piloting a functional vision screen tool and corresponding interventions within a MTSS framework to promote equitable practices. Evaluation methods included gathering stakeholder feedback, collecting intervention and screening data, and assessing the project’s feasibility by other school-based occupational therapists (OTs) across the district. Findings supported the need for early identification and intervention related to functional vision skills and highlighted the key role of OT in supporting participation and academic success through a tiered service delivery framework.

This capstone project demonstrates how OTs can contribute to school-based MTSS initiative by promoting early identification, intervention, and prevention for functional vision difficulties. The project offers a sustainable approach to supporting a student’s participation and success in kindergarten.
