Abstract
The vulnerability of soil carbon pools to changing environmental conditions is a key factor regulating ecosystem carbon balance. At the northeastern US Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, soil-atmosphere carbon fluxes have changed dramatically over the past 20 years: summer soil respiration flux has doubled since 2015, and heterotrophic microbial mineralization has increased similarly, coinciding with a decrease in carbon content in organic soil horizons. In this seminar, I will explore these changes in the context of temporal and spatial variation in soil carbon pool vulnerability across the landscape. I will also discuss proposed drivers of changing carbon dynamics, including an increase in carbon allocation belowground to root tissues and root exudates.
