Abstract
International students from 90 countries have joined UBC’s Okanagan campus to pursue their undergraduate degrees and ultimately gain meaningful employment related to their field of study. Experiential learning is a key component of their undergraduate experience however; local knowledge and cultural barriers can impede international students from being engaged in this area. In partnership with the UBC Okanagan campus Co-operative (Co-op) Education Offices; the ISI-Co-op Grant Pilot Project will create funding opportunities in support of engaging international undergraduate students in Co-op work placements. The first funding program, called the International Student Co-op Hiring Grant, will provide grant funding to eligible employers to create Co-op work experiences for international students. In supplement to this, the International Student Travel Grant program for international students will be established, in support of students who will need to travel and/or relocate in order to engage in the Co-op work experience for which they’d be hired.
