Solar wind quasi invariant within ICMEs
Abstract
The ratio of the magnetic‐to‐kinetic energy densities in the solar wind is an in situ measurement that correlates well with the solar activity cycle. For this reason it has been called a “solar wind quasi‐invariant” (QI). In this paper we investigate the probability density functions (PDFs) of QI in Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejections (ICMEs). The obtained PDF is discussed in terms of log‐normal and log‐kappa functions. A comparison with the PDFs as obtained for the solar wind during maximum and minimum phases of solar cycle 23 (1996–2007) is presented.
