Abstract

Research at the Underwater Vision and Imaging Lab of the University of Miami has been focused on the development of various underwater vision technologies to facilitate the automatic visually guided operation of submerisbles and to construct 2-D maps and 3-D object models.

In this talk, I will first provide an overview of our earlier work on the development various technologies based on the processing of optical data under good visibility. I will also dicuss some work on the enhancement an processing of optical stereo data under strong scattering. I will then describe our work in recent years on the development of computer vision techniques for sonar data, namely, 2-D orward-scan sonar video imagery from DIDSON, BlueView and other similar systems. This research also covers the integration of inforamtion from optical and sonar data to improve performance.
