Abstract
With the rising cost of experimentation and the ever-increasing computational capabilities of modern CPUs and GPUs, the Navy has begun to rely more on simulations for training, research, development, and testing. This presentation will focus on the Modular Acoustic Simulation Toolset of the Department of the Navy (MASTODON), developed at Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City Division (NSWC PCD). MASTODON is a physics-based acoustic simulator capable of simulating transmission loss, target strength, and imaging sonar time series. MASTODON uses modern programming practices and integrates models for propagation, beam patterns, target scattering, bottom reverberation, and ambient noise for sophisticated simulations.
Presenter Bio
Denton Woods received his Ph.D. degree in physics from the University of North Texas, Denton, TX, in 2015. Since then, he has worked as a scientist at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City Division, located in Panama City, FL. His work is primarily in the area of developing sonar simulation capabilities, with related areas of interest being parallel programming and target scattering. He is also a Reserve Engineering Duty Officer in training in the United States Navy, holding the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade.
