Abstract
Typical survey with a narrow-swath sensor may suffer from sub-optimal coverage (for example, spatially inhomogeneous coverage) or even have gaps not imaged at all. In-air surveys can avoid these issues by using accurate positioning with GPS. However, underwater surveys cannot use GPS, and without alternative positioning means, such as USBL, become unreliable. The simple device is proposed that significantly widens the swath and thus relaxes the constraints on positioning accuracy.
Presenter Bio
Dr Yuri Rzhanov received his Ph.D. degree in Semiconductor Physics from the Russian Academy of Sciences, in 1983. Before joining the University of New Hampshire in 2000, he had been working at the Heriott-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland. His research interests include optical methods of seafloor mapping, blending techniques for construction of photomosaics from imagery acquired underwater, and seabottom structure reconstruction from multiple views. Currently he is a Research Professor at the Center for the Coastal and Ocean Mapping / Joint Hydrographic Center (CCOM/JHC) at the University of New Hampshire.
