Abstract

Xabier Guinda will talk about the main characteristics and research activities of his working center in Spain, the Environmental Hydraulics Institute "IH Cantabria" of the University of Cantabria, and about the work he has being doing here in the CCOM, which has been focused on the use of hydroacoustic techniques for subtidal habitat mapping and on the possibilities of video mosaicing for the assessment of biological communities. Regarding this last part, he has been carrying out a research plan together with Yuri Rzhanov (CCOM) and Larry Harris and Jenn Dijkstra (Zoology Department, UNH), for the assessment of subtidal macroalgae communities, with the intention of developing a remotely performed assessment method based in the use of ROVs.

Presenter Bio

Xabier Guinda works as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Environmental Hydraulics Institute (IH Cantabria) of the University of Cantabria in Spain. He graduated in Marine Sciences from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (1997) and received a Ph.D. from the University of Cantabria in 2008. His Ph.D. thesis dealed with biological and physicochemical aspects regarding the implementation of the European Water Framework Directive. He has participated in different types of projects, from microalgae culture to commercial fisheries, but his main research topics are related with marine benthic ecology (especially macroalgae), water quality monitoring and environmental assessment of anthropogenically disturbed sites. The use of remote sensing hydroacoustic and visual techniques for the cartography of the seafloor and associated communities is currently one of his main fields of interest, which is why he was funded by the Spanish government to conduct a postdoctoral stay at the CCOM/JHC to further his knowledge in this area.
