Abstract

With the emergence of new sensors and platforms, geospatial information is becoming available at unprecedented rates and forms, ranging from distributed video feeds and crowdsourced maps to small satellite feeds, and social media contributions. This is changing the traditional spatial information landscape, and necessitates the pursuit of novel solutions to take advantage of these new sources of information. In this presentation we give sample examples of research activities pursued in George Mason University’s Center for Geospatial Intelligence that are characterized by the innovative use of non-traditional sources of openly-accessible spatial data. Through these representative examples we highlight the emerging opportunities and challenges that will be re-shaping the geospatial information science landscape.

Presenter Bio

Dr. Anthony Stefanidis is a Professor and Chair of the Dept. of Geography & Geoinformation Science at George Mason University, and the director of Mason’s Center for Geospatial Intelligence. He holds PhD and MS degrees in Digital Photogrammetry from The Ohio State University, and an engineering degree in Spatial Information Systems from the National Technical University of Athens (Greece).

Dr. Stefanidis’ areas of expertise include image analysis, sensor networks, and the geosocial analysis of social media feeds. His current research activities are funded by IARPA, the National Geospatial-Information Agency (NGA), Draper Lab, Air Force, and the Army Geospatial Center. His past research activities include projects funded by NSF, NGA, NASA, the USGS, and the European Union, with total budgets of approximately $7 million. He has co-edited three books, and has authored nearly 100 fully refereed journal and conference publications.

For his activities he has received numerous awards from the American and the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS and ISPRS), the US Geospatial Intelligence Foundation, the University of Maine, and The Ohio State University.
