Abstract

CCOM-JHC owns and operates several different models of tide stations, each with its own idiosyncratic recording format, resolution, error generation, and technology. To facilitate generating clean and continuous data sets that match NOAA tide data standards, Capt. Ben developed these tools for translating, cleaning, resampling, and analyzing raw tide data. The tools can be used on any time series data.

The tools are written in the Python programming language and therefore can be run on any system that has Python installed.

Presenter Bio

Captain Ben Smith studied Electrical Engineering and Architecture at the University of Arizona, Tucson, and Computer Science at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. In Alaska, he worked for the the National Weather Service and several architectural and engineering firms before settling in to a career in Software Engineering. After returning to the continental U.S., he was the UNIX and networking editor of BYTE Magazine, the major international computing magazine in the 1980s and 90s. He has two published books on UNIX.

In 1998, he retired from software engineering to build and sail his yacht, Mother of Perl. In 2001, he joined CCOM-JHC as the captain of Coastal Surveyor.

He continues to program, no longer in Perl, but in Python.
