Abstract
The research environment has evolved over the past several years with an increasing emphasis on sharing data with investigators not involved in initial data acquisition. Not only does open data access enable new discovery and improve transparency in the scientific process, but it also ensures that financial investments made in basic scientific research provide ongoing benefits. While the rise of open data access brings exciting new opportunities for discovery it also raises many technical and social challenges. This talk will explore a variety of resources that support data stewardship throughout the marine geoscience research data life cycle, and will highlight examples of domain-focused data curation and synthesis efforts including the Global Multi-Resolution Topography (GMRT) Synthesis and GeoMapApp.
Presenter Bio
Vicki Ferrini is a Research Scientist at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University. Originally a coastal oceanographer focused on studying shallow water sedimentary environments, over the past 10 years she been involved with high-resolution mapping programs in a variety of environments spanning shallow-water coastal environments to deep-sea mid-ocean ridges. She has worked with a variety of mapping systems and platforms including Ships, AUVs, HOVs and ROVs. While her research interests are generally focused on the use of seafloor mapping data to understand active processes on the seafloor, Vicki spends most of her time working in the field of geoinformatics, supporting many aspects of the marine geoscience data life cycle.
