Abstract

This talk will provide an overview briefing on the IHO and its roles and influence and an update on the various activities that are being undertaken by the IHO that have relevance to Ocean Mapping and other programs being undertaken at UNH CCOM.

This will include:

  • IHO S-100/S-101 standards development and implementation
  • e-Navigation
  • Crowd Sourced Bathymetry
  • Marine Spatial Infrastructures (MSDI)
  • Data quality
  • Training and education standards for hydrographers
  • Capacity Building
    • GEBCO Mapping Programme
    • Hydrographic risk analysis for developing States

Presenter Bio

Robert Ward is the President of the International Hydrographic Bureau, which is the Secretariat of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), based in Monaco. He is a mariner and hydrographic surveyor by profession and has conducted surveys in all corners of the world. As well as command at sea, he has a long history of involvement in national and international hydrographic relations with particular emphasis on the implementation and development of policies associated with electronic chart navigation and digital hydrographic data. He has a wide experience of the IHO, IMO and related inter-governmental organisations dealing with navigation safety and standards. Before he was elected to his position in Monaco, he was The Deputy Hydrographer of Australia.
