Recent Advances in Ocean Mapping
Abstract
The article discusses the development of a new generation of multibeam sonars capable of mapping targets in the water-column and seafloor and the development of visualization tools that allow water-column data to be viewed in 3D in real time. The water column mapping tools are a key component in the Center's efforts to map submerged oil and gas seeps. It notes how the past 10 years saw changes in the ability to map and visualize the seafloor and water column without evidence of slowing down.
