Description
1868-1873. Cage crinoline with a flaring shape and shoulder straps.
Seven cotton tapes hold thread-covered wire in place to create the supportive shape of this cage crinoline, which has a wire-free area at the top front and is secured with a buckled waist band and shoulder straps. Three tapes merge at center back, creating slightly more fullness in back, and four are spread evenly around the rest of the shape. Nine wire semicircles run from hip to hip around the back at the top. Beneath these, twenty individual round hoops create a widening cone to the hem, flaring toward the bottom for a triangular skirt shape. Machine-made.
