Description

Pre-1750. Orange silk stockings with three large satin stitch embroidered flowers forming the clocks (ornamentation extending up the calf from the ankle) on both inside and outside of each stocking. The welt (top) has narrow green and white horizontal stripes. Each stocking is knitted flat and shaped to follow the contours of the leg, reaching from the welt to the toe and joined at the back of the leg with a single seam that runs from the welt to under the heel. The heel is knitted of a piece with the main stocking and given shape by the seam. The gusset and sole are one continuous piece, which is seamed to the sides of the heel and to the edges of the stocking at both sides of the foot and across the front of the toe. Damage from wear has been darned. Knitted on a knitting frame. Hand-embroidered and darned.
