Abstract

"Reflections on purpose: the need for change in core curriculum and accreditation" is a podcast with Anne Neal, president of the American Council of Trustees and Alumni (ACTA). Neal discusses the lack of emphasis on civic learning within institutions’ curricula and comments on ACTA’s advocacy work to restore knowledge of U.S. History, Civics and the Constitution as a focus of higher education. Neal also comments on accreditation’s role in quality assurance of higher education and ACTA’s view that accreditation has strayed from its original purpose, has become less effective and should no longer be a gatekeeper for federal student aid programs. Neal also offers suggestions for how accrediting organizations might restructure to intrude less on institutional governance.

Interview facilitation, commentary and discussion presented by Kathryn Dodge, Alison Griffin, and Elise Scanlon of Radio Higher Ed.
