Abstract

"Ideas for restoring the heart of the academy "is a podcast interview featuring Robert Zemsky, largely focused on his latest book Checklist for Change: Making Higher Education a Sustainable Enterprise (2013). Zemsky discusses his thoughts on higher education reform including the concepts of financial sustainability, "the importance of faculty engagement" in curriculum design, governance and college leadership. Additionally, he highlights examples of institutions that utilized what he refers to as "collective action." Zemsky further discusses his work with the Spellings’ Commission and his thoughts on education innovations, including massive open online courses (MOOCs). Zemsky also offers recommendations for future action regarding the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act (HEA) and discusses the future of higher education and its parallels with the healthcare industry.
