Abstract

White-tailed deer in New Hampshire historically persisted at relatively low densities due to the state’s severe winters that limited populations. However, in 2025 white-tailed deer harvest in the state was the highest on record, marking a remarkable population recovery from a historic low in the early 1980s. Management of deer in New Hampshire must adapt as the state faces new challenges due to increasing suburbanization, milder winters, growing deer densities, and the looming threat of chronic wasting disease.
