Abstract

Abstract

BACKGROUND: With rising student enrollment, colleges and universities are relying more on adjunct clinical nursing faculty as Clinical Nurse Educators (CNEs). Recruiting and retaining qualified CNEs is essential to high-quality clinical education. Although clinically proficient, CNEs may face challenges with teaching methods, instructional strategies, and formative feedback. This quality improvement (QI) project evaluated CNE’s competencies and developed a sustainable multimedia educational tool to enhance feedback skills in clinical education.

METHODS: The Academic Clinical Nurse Educator Skill Acquisition Tool (ACNESAT), a validated 40-item Likert-scale instrument created by Shellenbarger and Sebach, was used to assess CNE competencies. Pre and post intervention Likert scale surveys were distributed via Qualtrics to the adjunct nursing faculty. The post-survey was completed after the project implementation and review process

RESULTS: Descriptive statistics were used to analyze survey data. A two-sample t-test was conducted to evaluate the impact of the 27-day implementation period. Statistical significance was not observed, likely due to the small sample, yet faculty feedback favorably reflected a positive reception. Participants expressed satisfaction with the program and its content, suggesting practical value and sustainability in clinical education.

CONCLUSION: Three multimedia instructional tools, developed in PowerPoint with embedded video lessons and delivered via Blackboard, were designed to enhance formative feedback skills. Approved for one continuing education (CE) credit, the tools show promise as a sustainable educational resource for CNEs to support instruction on feedback strategies in clinical education.
