Abstract

Perspective informed by policy roles in legislative and executive branches, at the state level and in the for-profit education sector” is a podcast interview with Jane Oates, Vice President for External Affairs and Workforce Development at Apollo Education Group. Oates previously served as the Assistant Secretary for Employment and Training at the Department of Labor under President Obama. Oates highlights important distinctions between policy and politics and offers suggestions for how higher education can work to better improve its relationship with employers and business leaders. Oates suggests higher education leaders need to do a better job of listening of the needs of employers and develop a willingness to reconstruct and revaluate academic programs to better meet the needs of students and employers. Likewise, Oates calls upon higher education to work with business leaders to provide accurate, clear, and local information regarding degree programs and job possibilities to students.

Oates goes on to comment upon the various sectors of higher education, calling upon leaders to work together to utilize best practices from all types of institutions. Citing utilization and acceptance of innovation standards, Oates challenges the higher education system in the United States to learn from institutions in other countries which are adapting at quicker pace than the United States.

Interview facilitation, commentary and discussion presented by Kathryn Dodge, Alison Griffin, and Elise Scanlon of Radio Higher Ed.
